What Happened To Eddie Vedder: Pearl Jam canceled a show meant for Eddie Vedder

Eddie Vedder (born Edward Louis Severson III on December 23, 1964) is an American singer, musician, and composer who is the lead vocalist and one of Pearl Jam’s three guitarists. He previously performed as a guest vocalist with Temple of the Dog, a tribute band to the late singer Andrew Wood.

Vedder, famed for his booming baritone voice, was voted eighth on Rolling Stone’s list of “Best Lead Singers of All Time,” based on a reader survey.

As a soundtrack for the film Into the Wild (2007), Vedder released his debut solo album in 2007.

Why Pearl Jam canceled the show meant for Eddie Vedder?

Pearl Jam’s concert in Vienna had to be canceled due to a throat injury suffered by frontman Eddie Vedder. The band stated in a statement that the damage was caused by Europe’s continuing heat wave. As a result, the July 20th performance in Vienna has been canceled.

The following statement was issued by the band:

“To all those who were anticipating a great Pearl Jam show tonight in Vienna, we were too. However, due to the extreme circumstances at the last outdoor site outside of Paris (heat, dust, and smoke from the fires), our singer Ed Vedder’s throat was left damaged. He has seen doctors and had treatment but as of yet, his vocal cords have not recovered. This is brutal news and horrible timing… for everyone involved.”

The statement continued:

“Those who work so hard to put on the shows as well as those who give their precious time and energies to attend… As a band, we are deeply sorry and have tried to find options to still play. And Ed wants to play. There’s just no throat available at this time.”

What are some of the instances where Pearl Jam canceled similar shows?

The band canceled a number of US performances earlier in May last year after bassist Jeff Ament tested positive for COVID-19. Initially, the infection was diagnosed in the band’s drummer, Matt Cameron.

The tour proceeded when the band used audience members as stand-in drummers on May 14 at the Oakland venue. The band then reformed at the Fresno location with former drummer Dave Krusen to continue the tour.

Pearl Jam invited 18-year-old fan Kai Neukermans up on stage to substitute in for drummer Marr Cameron after he tested for COVID-19. During their Oakland performance, the band also included touring musicians Josh Klinghoffer and Richard Stuverud.
