What are the Most Popular Sports to Bet On in Ghana?

With betting live and legal in Ghana, which sports are we wagering on more than any other?

What is interesting about the Ghanaian betting market is that it doesn’t necessarily mirror the popular sports in other countries. Football remains number one, but the love of boxing, basketball and athletics ensures that Ghana is striking out on its own compared to other nations around the globe.

Racing Ahead

Although Ghana has a heritage of horse racing, which can still be enjoyed today via the Accra Turf Club, the sport simply isn’t as popular as it is in the UK, America or parts of Asia.

Indeed, horse racing is the second most wagered-upon sport in the United Kingdom, while greyhound racing is also favored – that’s a sport that has been around for more than a century.

The most popular racing events around the world include the Grand National, Kentucky Derby, Melbourne Cup and the English Greyhound Derby, and these are also some of the most important betting heats as well. The greyhound betting odds for the Derby are published months in advance of the race, which is held in June, and in 2023 the likes of Fromposttopillar (8/1), Ballinabola Ed (16/1), Hopes Paddington (16/1) and Romeo Command (16/1) are the most fancied to prevail.

You can bet on horse and greyhound racing in Ghana, but these certainly aren’t the most common sports to wager on.

Football Crazy

It’s by far and away the most popular sport to play in Ghana, so it’s no surprise to learn that football is also the most bet-upon as well.

The bookmakers offer odds for the leading competitions around the globe, such as the English Premier League, Champions League and major international tournaments like the World Cup. You can bet on the latter years in advance, with France (6/1), Brazil (8/1) and England (8/1) already the favorites for World Cup 2026 – how about a wager on the Black Stars at 500/1? Can they replicate their heroics from 2010?

Not only can Ghanaians bet on who they think will win the competition or individual games, there are also betting markets for how many goals will be scored, corners taken, bookings and red cards received etc.

With so many Ghanaian players, such as the Ayew brothers, Thomas Partey and Inaki Williams, employed by clubs in Europe, it’s little wonder that this is one of the most popular betting activities for people in Ghana.

Did you know that Ghana has produced more world champions in boxing than any other sport? Azumah Nelson, Ike Quartey and Isaac Dogboe are just three that have dominated their weight division, so consequently, boxing has also become a popular sport to bet on.

Massive thanks to @toprank @CarlMoretti and @bobarum for the many opportunities given to me. I am really grateful. Will Return in the ring soon. Thank you all for your unflinching support.

It helps that there tends to be boxing every single weekend somewhere around the world, be it in America, the UK or Asia, and so there’s no shortage of odds to consider.

The third most popular sport to bet on in Ghana is basketball. The success of Benjamin Bentil, ‘Pops’ Mensah-Bosu and Amida Brimah has been reflected in more Ghanaians playing basketball, which in turn has led to an increase in betting on the NBA and the EuroLeague.

So Ghana has struck out on its own as far as its most bet-upon sports are concerned, although we follow much of the rest of the world in that football remains the most popular opinion.
