Wendi Campbell died on Monday, January 15, 2024, after a long battle with cancer. She had been open with her diagnosis of a golf-ball-sized tumor in her brain, which was discovered in 2022.
In an obituary, posted on the Henry Walser Funeral Home’s website, her family said the 53-year-old’s last wish was to donate her brain to the Sheila Singh Lab at McMaster University to support Glioblastoma research.
“On Monday, January 15, we experienced the loss of our favourite person, Wendi,” the obituary said. Campbell has been the CEO of the Food Bank of Waterloo Region for more than 15 years.
“Wendi’s vision to make our community a better place was central to everything she did,” the obituary said about her time working for the food bank. “We have an immense gratitude for every moment Wendi gifted us. She accomplished more in her 53 years here than we could ever imagine in our own lives. In her words, she had no regrets”
Her family asked that donations in her name be made to the Food Bank of Waterloo Region, the House of Friendship and St. Mary’s General Hospital Foundation, and the Kitchener Rangers Community Fund.
In a tribute; Kitchener councillor, Dave Schnider tweeted; “Our Community has lost one of our brightest lights”
Regional chair Karen Redman shared: “Our community has lost a great leader. Wendi was a fierce advocate and caring community builder. She leaves an impressive legacy of impact”
Waterloo MPP Catherine Fife, posted; “Waterloo Region & province have lost a remarkable community leader,” she wrote. “Her legacy of championing food insecurity & supporting our most vulnerable community members lives on”
