Wayne LaPierre career

Since earning his master’s degree in government and politics, Wayne LaPierre has worked as a lobbyist and government activist.

He has held director positions with the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, the American Conservative Union, and the American Association of Political Consultants.

He has been the executive vice president and chief executive of the National Rifle Association (NRA), the biggest gun rights advocacy and gun safety training/marksmanship organization in the US, since 1991.

After serving as a legislative assistant to Democratic Virginia delegate and proponent of gun rights Vic Thomas, LaPierre joined the NRA in 1977. On January 5, 2024, he stated that he would be leaving the NRA, effective January 31.

The NRA received $103 million in contributions in 2014, while LaPierre received $985,885 in remuneration. The NRA contributed $95 million in total in 2015.

As mandated by federal law, LaPierre earned a $3.7 million deferred pay distribution from his “employee-funded deferred compensation plan” in that year, which increased his total yearly compensation to $5,110,985, according to the NRA.

After an 18-month probe, New York Attorney General Letitia James filed a civil lawsuit on August 6, 2020, against the NRA, LaPierre, treasurer Wilson Phillips, Joshua Powell, the association’s current executive director of general operations, and general counsel and secretary John Frazer.

The lawsuit alleges financial misconduct, fraud, and misuse of charitable funds, and it calls for the association’s dissolution due to persistent fraudulent management.

Federal Judge Harlin Hale of the Northern District of Texas determined that the NRA’s attempt to have the case transferred to Texas and the dissolution lawsuit dismissed was made in bad faith.

During the eleven-day hearing, LaPierre’s salary and lavish business expenditures on personal things like designer outfits, private jet travel, and a traveling “glam squad” for his wife were the center of attention.

Justice Joel Cohen of the New York Supreme Court rejected the NRA’s attempt to dissolve in March 2022, but the case against Pierre and the group was allowed to proceed.
