Use an Android Tablet as Extended Desktop for a Windows PC

According to a study, people who use extended desktops are 44% more productive than other users. Two screens are better than one is what it says. I thought why not give it a try on my Samsung tab and see if there’s any truth in the research. So with the mindset of increasing productivity without investing in extra monitors, I started researching on extending the Windows desktop on my tablet.

Tablet Expander Screen

After trying out several tools, I decided to use an impressive application called iDisplay. Thanks to that, I can extend my computer screen through a Wi-Fi hotspot or an Ad-hoc connection. And not only Android, using this app users can also clone or extend their desktop to iPad.

Use iDisplay to extend the desktop for Android tablets

To get started, download and install the iDisplay app on your computer and tablet. While the desktop installer is free to use, you’ll have to pay a small price ($4.99) for the tablet app. For this article, I’ll show how to connect an Android tablet to a Windows computer, but you can also replicate the process easily on iPad and Mac.

Note: Before we continue, I recommend that you lock the tablet screen in landscape mode and connect the device and computer to the same Wi-Fi network.

After you have installed the applications on the respective devices, run the desktop application. If you have multiple graphics cards installed on your system, right-click the iDisplay shortcut icon and select Run with Graphics Processor from the right-click context menu and select the best graphics card installed on your computer.

Run with specific graphics processor

Once you see the iDisplay icon in the System Tray after launching the app, pick up the tablet and launch the iDisplay app on it. If you are lucky, the application will automatically detect the server running on your computer and list the computer name as one of the available connections. If you don’t see the device in the list, navigate to the tab Manual input and enter the IP address and port number of the server running on your computer.

Relation

To get the IP address along with the port number, simply hover over the iDisplay icon on the taskbar. While the connection between devices is being made, the computer screen may flicker a few times before you see the screen on the auxiliary output, which is the tablet.

Connection details

Note: If your video driver has problems running the app, try iDisplay’s Safe Mode. It will install a virtual driver that might work. If that also fails, try contacting the developer for a solution or get a full refund.

Select Display

By default, the device will be connected not as an extension but as a duplicate display. To convert the screen on your tablet to an extended display, open your graphics card settings and find the option to Set up multiple devices. If you are using the default Windows display settings, open Display settings from the Dashboard and click the link Project on secondary screen. Here change the display settings as extended desktop.

Conclusion

So that’s how you can now extend your desktop workloads to tablets and touch-screen Windows experiences. The extended monitor is for light work only. Do not attempt to play the video or the display adapter may fail. All in all, iDisplay is a great app but if you are looking for a cheap alternative for Android, you can also try REDFLY’s ScreenSlider. The only drawback at this point is that it doesn’t support Windows 8.
