The Boston Globe reported on March 13, 2008, that the Patriots will not extend a contract to Brown for the 2008 campaign. Brown announced his retirement from the NFL on September 25, 2008, during a press conference with Patriots owner Robert Kraft and head coach Bill Belichick.

With 557 catches, he ended his playing career as the New England Patriots’ all-time leader in that category.

On June 4, 2012, it was revealed that Brown had defeated former head coach Bill Parcells and safety Fred Marion in a fan poll to be inducted into the Patriots Hall of Fame.

He started coaching with the New England Patriots in an unofficial capacity at the start of the 2019 NFL season, helping out wide receivers coach Joe Judge, who was frequently preoccupied with his other job as special teams coordinator.

In addition in 2016, he was a member of the Bill Walsh Minority Coaching Fellowship working with the Patriots.
