With so many cloud storage solutions (Dropbox, Google Drive, SkyDrive), I’m sure most of us maintain accounts across multiple services to take advantage of the additional free storage. Now, sometimes one may need to transfer some files from one service to another.
Of course, one can download files from one service and then re-upload that file to another service. Not only does this process take a long time, but you end up consuming twice the bandwidth of your files. Even if you do drag and drop between the respective service folders on your computer, the bandwidth loss persists. Not optimal, right?
Today, we will show you how you can do such file transfer using an online tool called SMEStorage. SMEStorage is basically an online service that allows you to access and manage multiple cloud storage accounts under a single roof. So let’s see how to use it to transfer files easily between Dropbox, Google Drive and SkyDrive.
Add an account to SMEStorage
Step 1: Go to SMEStorage and create a free account with them. As a free user, you get 5 GB of Amazon S3 hosted by SMEStorage plus any of 3 supported cloud storage account managers. For the task that we have in mind, a free account is enough.
Step 2: Once you create and confirm your account, log in to your homepage admin panel. Here choose option, Cloud provider management to begin.
Step 3: Now, under Currently Using Providers, press the . button Add a new supplier to add Dropbox, Google Docs (will also work with Google Drive as the two are now merged) and SkyDrive.
Step 4: You will have to authenticate your accounts and give them SMEStorage access by giving it some permissions to your account. Once that’s done, SMEStorage will sync all your files so you can access them all through SMEStorage.
Finally, once you’ve added all the accounts, it’s time to see how to transfer files from one account to another without downloading them to your computer. So let’s get started…
Transfer files from one cloud storage to another online storage
Step 1: Open the SMEStorage file manager (not beta version) and open the cloud storage account that you want to copy your files from.
Step 2: Now the idea is to create a download link for a file from one cloud storage service and then use the remote upload feature on the same link to upload it to another service. So navigate to the file you want to transfer to another cloud account, click on it and select the option Create direct link. Copy the link to your clipboard.
Step 3: Open the destination account now and navigate to the folder where you want to copy your files. Click the download button and paste the direct download link you created above. Click the Download by URL button to start the process.
The file will be queued in your cloud sync task and will be done fairly quickly.
Conclusion
As a free user, there are some limitations when it comes to transferring files, such as the file size cannot exceed 20 MB and you can only transfer 1024 MB of files in a month. There are supported premium services and you can pay a sum to remove the restriction.
So the next time you have to transfer files from one cloud service to another without sacrificing bandwidth, SMEStorage is really an efficient way to do it.
