Pop-up banners and ads that appear on the lock screen and home screen of your Galaxy phone can ruin your entire One UI experience. Unlike other troubleshooting tricks, a simple phone restart won’t fix the problem for you. Instead, you can do the tricks below and remove ads from your Galaxy phone’s lock screen.
1. Disable lock screen service
Samsung’s Galaxy smartphone portfolio includes phones other than S-series and Fold-series phones. The company also produces A-series, M-series, F-series smartphones for developing countries.
These are affordable phones with flagship-like features. And Samsung has a habit of bundling these phones with lock screen services to cover the cost. Glance is one of the pre-installed lock screen services on Galaxy A-series and M-series phones. It is enabled by default. From time to time, Samsung supplements such services with monthly security updates.
Lock screen services like Glance will display ads on the lock screen and even promote apps and games directly on it. It will take over the lock screen experience of your Galaxy phone and you will no longer see the wallpaper of your choice. Thankfully, Samsung offers an option to disable the add-on. The option is buried in the Settings menu. Here’s how you can access and use it.
Step 1: Open the Settings app on your Samsung Galaxy phone.
Step 2: Select Lock screen.
Step 3: Click on Wallpaper Service.
Step 4: Select None and you are ready to go.
Samsung lets you tweak the Glance add-on with some customization options to reduce spam. However, we would advise against that. Just choose no and disable the wallpaper service. Note that there is no way to completely uninstall Glance from One UI. It is included in the system.
When you disable wallpaper services like Glance, you can enable Always On Display and use the selected wallpaper on the lock screen.
2. Disable Appearance on Top Right
The Android operating system allows developers to implement ‘Appear on Top’ functionality to allow apps to display banners above other apps and on the lock screen.
Although this permission is designed for IM (Instant Messaging) applications and light bubble browser (which allows you to browse web pages on the go), some developers still go ahead and use the permission this to show ads on your Galaxy phone.
These developers also trick you into granting permissions when you first launch the app. And then you start getting ads. You need to find out such apps and disable the necessary permission.
Step 1: Swipe down and bring up the notification center. Tap the Settings gear and open the Settings menu.
Step 2: Scroll down to the Applications menu.
Step 3: You need to identify those apps (recently installed, frequently used apps, etc.) that send ads on your lock screen and home screen.
Step 4: You will find the Appear on Top permission from the app info menu.
Step 5: Tap it and disable permissions from the following menu.
From now on, the app will not show ads on your phone. Next time you update the same app from the Google Play Store, it may ask you to re-enable the ‘Appear on Top’ permission or enable it forcibly in the updated version.
If you no longer need such apps on your phone, you can always go ahead and uninstall them. This will fix the problem once and for all. Follow the steps below to remove apps from your Galaxy phone.
Step 1: Long press on the app icon from the One UI home screen or the app drawer.
Step 2: Open the application information menu.
Step 3: Select the Uninstall icon at the bottom and confirm your decision.
