Born Lanny Lee Larson, the sportscaster adopted the name Tom Larson after moving to Boston in 1969 after spending time in Illinois and Lansing, Michigan.
Larson’s legendary career with the Bruins television crew started during the 1969-70 season. He hosted the pregame and postgame studio shows.
In the 1980s, he was the sports director at WHDH Radio. He later joined the New England Sports Network (NESN), shortly after the regional sports network’s inception.
In 1981, nine years after the Boston Bruins’s 1972 Stanley Cup win, he vowed not to shave his beard until the Bruins won the Stanley Cup again. 30 years later in 2011, he got his wish.
Larson was known to enjoy sports to the core, and during his time at the New England Sports Network (NESN), he was also a contributing writer for the media outlet.
