It is not in the DNA of African parents to apologize to their children when they wrong them, it is an abomination of the highest order of parenting. To them, the adult is always right regardless of who offended the other.

A parent once said, “We’re the adults, and adults don’t owe children apologies, regardless of our mistakes, we don’t owe our children any apology”. It is sad to hear a parent say this publicly forgetting that they are the first models to their kids. It costs nothing to render an apology to your child, doing so rather inculcates into the child the art of forgiving others, navigate within friends, manage their adolescent period and handle situations when they become full-grown men and women.
There are dozens of situations that call for an apology, citing Omokehinde’s mother as an example, she realized how necessary it is to apologize to her son after he offended him. She wrote him a note telling him how sorry she was for whatever that happened between them and added special food to please her son.
This apology will go a long way to help Omokehinde identify and understand feelings. To make him get a clearer understanding, she may walk him through the reason for her actions. A child psychologist once advised parents to talk through a misunderstanding after they have apologized to their children to help them understand emotions.
