Palmater, a member of the Eel River Bar Mi’kmaw Nation in New Brunswick, was known for her bold feminist humour and fronted her own radio and television shows. She created and hosted the award-winning The Candy Show on APTN, was a regular co-host on CTV’s afternoon talk show The Social and acted in various shows, including Trailer Park Boys. She was also a frequent guest panelist on the CBC Radio One comedy series, Because News, hosted by Gavin Crawford, and narrated the documentary series Skindigenous. Palmater had a recurring role in the CBC Television sitcom Run the Burbs, broadcast posthumously.

Palmater was married to Denise Tompkins. Denise Tompkins is the manager of an entertainment show dubbed “The Candy Show Entertainment”. She died on December 25, 2021, aged 53 at her home in Toronto, Canada. She was diagnosed of eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis before her demise. It was revealed that she had been receiving several weeks of medical treatment at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto. When she passed on CBC News general manager Susan Marjetti had this to say about her, “Candy was an incredible talent but also a truly special person,” . “It is such a loss. Another light has gone out in the world today.” She was estimated to be worth US$1 million upon her demise.
