The Kerala Story: Wiki, Cast, Box Office Collection, Controversies

The Kerala Story brings the nation’s attention to the love jihad conspiracy. The distortion must be made clear to the entire society. The movie’s producer, director, and crew all made a commendable and brave effort in this regard.

Background

The Kerala Story is a 2023 drama film in Hindi that was produced and directed by Vipul Amrutlal Shah. Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, Sonia Balani, and Siddhi Idnani are the film’s stars. The plot centres on a made-up account of a group of Kerala women who are forced to become Muslims and later enlist in the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

The “love jihad” conspiracy theory serves as the movie’s foundation. The movie launched in theatres on May 5, 2023, and it was a commercial success, becoming the second-highest grossing Hindi movie of the year. Critics, however, gave the work overwhelmingly negative reviews and labelled it as Islamophobic propaganda. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is currently in power, heavily promoted the movie and used it in its campaigning for the Karnataka assembly election. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Indian National Congress have also accused the filmmakers of defaming the state and advancing the Sangh Parivar’s agenda.

The character of Fathima Ba, a Hindu Malayali nurse who converted to Islam and joined the ISIS before winding up in an Afghan prison, was featured in the teaser video that was released on November 3, 2022. There are many questions surrounding the claim that 32000 women were abducted, even though the events in the movie are based on the accounts of three women from Kerala, namely Nimisha Nair, Sonia Sebastian, and Merin Jacob, who converted to Islam and went to Afghanistan to join ISIS between 2016 and 2018.Later, in response to legal action, the film’s creators removed all promotional materials that contained the inaccurate figure, including the teaser.

Controversies

The film has drawn criticism from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Indian National Congress, for spreading “communal misinformation” in line with the Sangh Parivar’s political objectives. The Tamil Nadu Multiplex Association appears to have stopped showing the movie after it performed poorly in Tamil Nadu, but the filmmakers dispute this and claim political censorship.

The film was outlawed on May 8 by the West Bengal government, which referred to it as “hate speech” and cited unfavourable intelligence reports that suggested rising communal tensions among the audience. The Supreme Court heard the filmmakers’ appeal of the ruling, and the ban was postponed.
