The Greatest African Players in the Premier League

The Premier League has provided a platform for many African footballers to showcase their talents over the years. Some have broken records and others have even competed for the Ballon d’Or award. But who are the greatest players from the African continent who took part in the Premier League?

Mohamed Salah

Mohamed Salah is arguably the greatest African player ever to grace the Premier League. The Egyptian began breaking records in his first season at Liverpool in 2017/18 after joining from AS Roma. Salah broke the goalscoring record that season after finding the net 32 times which is a record that still stands to this day. Salah has been a consistent goalscorer in the Premier League up until the current season in which Liverpool has struggled in general. In a bet on the Premier League 22/23, Liverpool is seemingly well out of the title race. They are offered at +37500 to perform a miraculous comeback at the latter end of the season. In the odds to win Premier League, Arsenal is now the clear favorite to secure what was initially an unlikely title success. Mikel Arteta’s side is offered at -150 to win their first title in 19 years in May. Salah’s consistency over his time at Liverpool would suggest that his impact on the league is not finished yet. The Egyptian and Liverpool will surely be back to their best in the near future.

Sadio Mane

Another African who has a strong claim to being one of the greatest Premier League players ever also played for Liverpool. Sadio Mane has now moved on to Bayern Munich but his impact on Liverpool and the Premier League will never be forgotten. Mane was the star player in Liverpool’s title-winning season of 2019/20 as the Reds ended a 30-year wait for their 19th league title victory. Mane was one of the world’s best players throughout his time at Anfield up until his final year with Jurgen Klopp’s side. Last year as Liverpool chased an unprecedented quadruple, Mane was the leading player for the Reds scoring crucial goals in all four competitions. Mane finished second in the Ballon d’Or rankings for his efforts in his final season on Merseyside.

Didier Drogba

Didier Drogba was incredibly successful during his time in the Premier League with Chelsea. The Ivorian won the Premier League Golden Boot twice for Chelsea as he played a starring role in numerous title victories. Between 2005 and 2015 he helped the Blues to four title victories in addition to seven domestic cups. His most vital contributions to Chelsea came against Bayern Munich in the 2011/12 UEFA Champions League final as he joined an exclusive club of African players to play a standout role in a European Cup victory.
