Heinicke grew up in Cartersville, Georgia, where he attended Collins Hill High School. As a senior, he threw for 4,218 yards and 44 touchdowns, setting a school record. He also rushed for 1,320 yards and 14 touchdowns, leading his team to a 10-2 record and the quarterfinals of the state playoffs.

Despite his impressive high school career, Heinicke was not highly recruited by college football programs. He decided to attend Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, where he would play for the Monarchs.

As a freshman in 2011, Heinicke started all 13 games for Old Dominion, throwing for 2,385 yards and 25 touchdowns. He also rushed for 363 yards and six touchdowns, earning the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Rookie of the Year award and leading the Monarchs to the FCS playoffs.

Heinicke continued to excel as a sophomore in 2012, throwing for 5,076 yards and 44 touchdowns, while also rushing for 348 yards and five touchdowns. He set an NCAA Division I record by throwing for 730 yards in a game against New Hampshire, earning the Walter Payton Award as the top offensive player in the FCS.

In 2013, Heinicke’s junior season, Old Dominion moved up to the FBS and joined Conference USA. Despite the tougher competition, Heinicke still had a solid season, throwing for 4,022 yards and 33 touchdowns. He led the Monarchs to a 8-4 record and a victory in the Beef O’Brady’s Bowl.

After his junior season, Heinicke decided to forgo his senior year and enter the NFL Draft. However, he went undrafted and signed with the Minnesota Vikings as a free agent.

Heinicke spent the 2015 and 2016 seasons on the Vikings’ practice squad, but did not see any game action. In 2017, he signed with the New England Patriots, but was released during training camp.

Later that year, Heinicke signed with the Houston Texans and was added to their practice squad. He was promoted to the active roster in December, but did not play in any games.

In 2018, Heinicke signed with the Carolina Panthers, where he reunited with his former college coach, Bobby Wilder, who was now the team’s assistant offensive coordinator. Heinicke made his NFL debut in Week 16 of the 2018 season, replacing an injured Cam Newton in the second half of a game against the Atlanta Falcons. He completed 33 of 53 passes for 274 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions in the 24-10 loss.

Heinicke was released by the Panthers in the offseason and signed with the XFL’s St. Louis BattleHawks for the 2020 season. However, the XFL season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In December 2020, Heinicke signed with the Washington Football Team to serve as the backup quarterback behind Alex Smith. However, in Week 16 of the 2020 season, Heinicke was pressed into action after Smith suffered a calf injury. He played well in relief, completing 12 of 19 passes for 137 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing for 22 yards and another touchdown in a narrow loss to the Carolina Panthers.
