Born on 12 June 1963 and departed on 5 June 2021, T. B. Joshua’s impact extended far beyond the borders of Nigeria, gaining widespread recognition in Africa and Latin America. He leveraged the power of social media, boasting over 6 million followers on Facebook and amassing a massive audience on his YouTube channel, Emmanuel TV, which, at one point, held the distinction of being the most-viewed Christian ministry on the platform. However, this digital prominence faced a setback in 2021 when YouTube suspended the channel, alleging homophobic hate speech.

Often referred to as the “Oprah of Evangelism” and hailed as “YouTube’s most popular pastor,” Joshua earned accolades for his contributions. The Nigerian government honored him with the Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) in 2008. Additionally, T.B. Joshua was voted the Yoruba man of the decade by the Pan-Yoruba media outlet Irohin-Odua. Despite his success, T.B. Joshua faced controversy and official blacklisting by the government of Cameroon in 2010. Forbes even declared him the third-richest pastor in Nigeria in 2011, a claim refuted by the church in an immediate response.
The charismatic pastor’s sudden demise on 5 June 2021, just a week before his 58th birthday, marked the end of an era. However, his posthumous legacy took a grim turn in 2024 when a BBC investigation accused him of raping and abusing followers over nearly two decades. Disturbing accusations included instances of child abuse allegedly occurring within a compound in Lagos, Nigeria, painting a darker aspect of a figure once celebrated for his spiritual leadership.
