Stream Audio or Sound From Windows Computer to Android

Speakers

Playing a video with speakers on isn’t always feasible. And using the headphones all the time isn’t convenient. The perfect solution to this would be wireless headphones that give you flexibility of position and posture while watching a video on your desktop or laptop.

Yesterday we saw how to use a Bluetooth phone headset as a wireless headphone for the computer, if you don’t possess a wireless headphone. But then, a Bluetooth headset isn’t that common either. What do you do if you don’t have it?

Previously, I have demonstrated the process of streaming sound from Android to my laptop using Bluetooth. I thought, there must be a way to do the reverse.. stream audio from computer to Android. That’d solve the purpose, isn’t it? You can watch the video on your PC but listen to it on your Android. Kinda interesting, no?

After a bit of research and testing, I got a decent app that could easily stream computer sound output to Android speakers which can be heard over a plugged in network and all that over the Wi-Fi network. So let’s see how it can be done.

Note: The strength of the Wi-Fi network could be a factor here. To reduce sound latency, have both the phone and the computer neat the Wi-Fi router.

Streaming the Sound

Step 1: Download and install SoundWire client on your Android and the corresponding server on your computer. After installing both the apps on respective devices, launch them. You might have to grant firewall access to the program on your computer.

Server

Step 2: Now look for the server address that’s displayed on the SoundWire server and write it down on the Android app. Having done that, click on the SoundWire image on the app to connect the client with the server.

Step 3: After successful connection, the SoundWire image will change from white to orange. You can now play anything on your computer and the output will be streamed to your device.

You might experience some delay in sound (very small in my experience) while watching a movie. Just head over to the settings and check packet buffer size, and test a few different settings. I am sure you will find a near perfect setting to fit your setup.

Conclusion

The app does a decent job in streaming computer sound to Android device as long as the network connectivity is good. Free users of the app can hear sounds for a stretch of 30 minutes after which we have to restart the app. As there is no limitation on number of times the app can be run, you can keep restarting the app and continue, or buy the pro version if you think it’s worth it.
