Stevie Wonder Top Songs and Awards

Stevie Wonder birthed as Stevland Hardaway Morris (born May 13, 1950) is an American singer-songwriter, guitarist, and record producer. He is regarded as a pioneer and inspiration by performers from various genres like as R&B, pop, soul, gospel, funk, and jazz. Wonder’s employment of synthesizers and other electronic musical instruments as a virtual one-man band during the 1970s changed the conventions of contemporary R&B.

He also aided in the evolution of such genres into the album period, constructing his LPs to be cohesive and consistent, as well as socially conscious statements with intricate compositions. Wonder, who had been blind since birth, was a child prodigy who signed with Motown’s Tamla label at the age of 11 and was given the professional moniker Little Stevie Wonder.

Who is Stevie Wonder?

Stevie Wonder was born on May 13, 1950, in Saginaw, Michigan, as Stevland Hardaway Judkins, the third of five children born to Lula Mae Hardaway and the second of Hardaway’s two children with Calvin Judkins. He was born six weeks early, which, along with the oxygen-rich environment in the hospital incubator, caused retinopathy of prematurity, a condition in which the growth of the eyes is halted and the retinas detach, causing him to go blind.

Wonder’s mother divorced his father and relocated to Detroit with her three children when he was four years old. Wonder grew up in Whitestone Baptist Church, where he sang in the choir and became a soloist when he was eight years old.

His mother then reestablished her relationship with her first child’s father (whose surname was also Hardaway) and changed her name back to Lula Hardaway, having two additional children.

When Stevie was signed by Motown in 1961, his surname was legally changed to Morris, which was an old family name, according to Lula Mae Hardaway’s authorized biography. The stage name “Little Stevie Wonder” was created by Berry Gordy.

He started playing instruments as a child, including the piano, harmonica, and drums. He established a singing duo with a buddy, calling themselves Stevie and John, and performed on street corners and at parties and dances.
