Steven Tallarico (born March 26, 1948) is an American vocalist best known as the lead singer of the Boston-based rock band Aerosmith, in which he also plays the harmonica, piano, and percussion. He’s been dubbed the “Demon of Screamin’” because of his tremendous wide vocal range and high screams.
He is also well-known for his gymnastics on stage. Tyler typically dresses in colorful, sometimes androgynous clothing and makeup for his concerts, with his distinctive scarves dangling from his microphone stand.

Steven Tallarico was born on March 26, 1948, in Manhattan, New York, at the Stuyvesant Polyclinic, and relocated to the Bronx when he was three years old. When he was about nine years old, his family moved to 100 Pembrook Drive in Northeast Yonkers. Tallarico is the son of secretary Susan Ray (June 2, 1925 – July 4, 2008) and classical musician and pianist Victor A. Tallarico (May 14, 1916 – September 10, 2011), who taught music at Cardinal Spellman High School in the Bronx.
Tyler’s father was Italian and German, while his mother was Polish, English, and African-Americ an. He has stated on several occasions that his maternal grandfather was Ukrainian, and he has changed his surname from “Czarnyszewicz” (from Polish: czarny, lit. ‘black’) to “Blancha” (perhaps from French: Blanche, lit. ‘white’).
Megan Smolenyak, a genealogist, discovered that Steven Tyler’s grandfather was Polish, born Felix Czarnyszewicz in 1892 in Klichaw, Belarus. He immigrated to the United States in 1914 and changed his surname to Blancha. He married Bessie Elliott there, and they had four children, including Steven’s mother, Susan.
Florian Czarnyszewicz, a well-known Polish writer who immigrated to Argentina, was Felix’s brother. Florian Czarnyszewicz is well known for his novel Nadberezecy, which tells the story of Poles living between the Berezina and Dnieper rivers between 1911 and 1920.
Giovanni Tallarico, his paternal grandpa, was from Cotronei, Calabria, Italy. Tyler discovered this while watching the genealogy show Who Do You Think You Are?
