Start date, weapons, leaks & everything we know so far

Destiny 2 Season of the Deep’s seasonal story is pretty much wrapped up (barring an epilogue of sorts), and that means our attention is turning to Destiny 2 Season 22 – the third season of the Lightfall era and the penultimate one before The Final Shape

After Solstice 2023, the next season will take the game through to the Winter, and if the current chapter is anything to go by, there are revelations in store for our Guardians. Here is everything we know about Destiny 2 Season 22 so far, including the start date and time, the story possibilities, and more.

SPOILER WARNING:
This guide contains story spoilers for Season of the Deep, so be sure to proceed at your own risk.

Is there a Destiny 2 Season 22 release date?

Purely because we know when Season of the Deep will end, we can say for certain that Destiny 2 Season 22 will begin on August 29 2023. This comes exactly one week after the Destiny showcase, during which we will learn about what’s to come in The Final Shape.

This is quite reminiscent of what happened last year. The Destiny Showcase of 2022 was an event in which we learned significant details about Lightfall, but also where we learned about Season of Plunder, the season which began that very same day.

It would seem likely then that this situation will repeat, and perhaps we will learn more about the nature of Destiny 2 Season 22 at the showcase event. At least this year we will get a week’s notice.

What do we know about Destiny 2 Season 22 content?

Precise details about what we can expect in Season 22 are yet to be revealed, but we can infer some things based on what has come before, what has happened recently, and what we know to be coming in the near future.

For example, we know that Destiny 2 Season 22 will follow the seasonal structure, meaning we will get new seasonal activities, new seasonal gear, and a seasonal story that will develop week to week.

We also know there will be another reprised raid returning to the game during Season 22. Which raid this will be has not yet been revealed, but there are only a handful of options left.

From Destiny 1, it could be either Crota’s End or Wrath of the Machine. Crota’s End had been mostly ruled out, as it would be more likely to be reworked as a dungeon, but it appears it may be the returning raid after all.

This would mean Wrath of the Machine, Scourge of the Past, or a return to the Leviathan raid(s) from early Destiny 2 would miss out.

Destiny 2 Season 22 weapons and gear

Good news, Guardians – we’re getting some more new toys to play with – as well as the returning hand cannon, Warden’s Law.

Bungie has also revealed that the following will drop from activities, and they’ll be focusable as soon as the season begins:

  • Crucible
    • Unending Tempest – Stasis Submachine Gun
  • Strikes
    • Luna Regolith III – Solar Sniper Rifle
  • Gambit
    • Qua Xaphan V – Void Machine Gun
  • Nightfall
    • Warden’s Law – Kinetic Hand Cannon
    • Pre Astyanax IV – Solar Precision Bow
  • Iron Banner
    • The Guiding Sight – Strand Scout Rifle
    • Point of the Stag – Arc Bow
  • Trials of Osiris
    • Igneous Hammer – Solar Hand Cannon
    • Cataphract GL3 – Strand Heavy Grenade Launcher

Bungie has also revealed that Ascendant Shards and Ascendant Alloys will be capped at 30, instead of 10, and Enhancement Prisms will be capped at 100 instead of 50.

The team says this is to remove the risk of losing them at the Postmaster, but as part of the move, they’ll no longer go to the Postmaster. That means you’ll need to use them, or lose them. Bungie says any you’ve already accrued will still be found in the Postmaster until they’re claimed.

What do we know about Season 22’s story?

Again, nothing can be confirmed on this front just yet. That said, if Season 22 continues the plot where Season 21 left off, we can make an educated guess as to what we might be doing in Destiny 2 Season 22.

If you have not yet finished the story content of Season 21, this might be your time to look away.

At the end of the Season of the Deep Story quest, we learn that the only one who can help us follow the Witness through the portal is the Witch Queen herself. Although we defeated Savathun last year, her Ghost, Immaru, is still very much alive and can bring her back.

The story for Season of the Deep leaves off with the heavy implication that our next goal will be to bring Savathun back, which is likely to be the focus of Season 22. Zavala mentioned that Ikora and Eris would be the ones to handle this, so it is likely that they will be the characters we will interact with the most during Destiny 2 Season 22.
