Barber did not make it to the finals of the 2013 World Championships after competing there. He had success at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where he placed third in the event as a 20-year-old, clearing 5.45 meters on his first try but falling at 5.55.
Barber achieved an NCAA Collegiate Record in the 2015 Texas Relays by setting a national record of 5.91 meters, which was also a personal best. He set a world record with the season’s opening event.

The New York Times reports that Barber successfully attributed a low-level cocaine offense in 2016 to a personal encounter with a woman he met on Craigslist the evening before Olympic trials, saving him from a multiyear suspension.
