Professional and Political Career:

TDP won 202 out of the 294 seats up for election to the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly in the 1983 election, and Rao himself won both of the seats he ran for. The Sanjaya Vichara Manch won 202 seats as a result of their alliance. On January 9, 1983, Rao was sworn in as the state’s 10th and first non-Congress Chief Minister alongside ten cabinet ministers and five ministers of state. While Rao was in the US for open heart surgery on August 15, 1984, the then-Gov. of Andhra Pradesh, Thakur Ram Lal, removed Rao from his position. However, a wave of anti-incumbency that swept the state in the December 1989 assembly elections led to his defeat, and the Congress took back control. He made a name for himself in national politics in 1989 by founding the National Front, an alliance of non-Congress parties that opposed the Congress. Along with the TDP, parties like the Janata Dal, the DMK, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), and the Indian Congress (Socialist) were also represented. Because he was unable to campaign in 1989 due to a mild stroke, NTR lost the election. He did, however, return to power in 1994, only to be overthrown by his son-in-law Nara Chandrababu Naidu in a subsequent internal revolution.
