Scottie Scheffler: America’s next legendary golfer

The United States seems to produce remarkable talents in almost any professional sport imaginable. In golf throughout history that has been no different.

Jack Nicklaus dominated the game between the 1960s and 1980s where he picked up a record 18 major trophies. In modern times, Tiger Woods has gone on to become widely acknowledged as one of the greatest players of all time.

In the sport’s history, the most accomplished players are mostly Americans, and current number one – which he has held since March 2022 – Scottie Scheffler looks like he could be next in line to make significant golfing history for his nation.

Scheffler has won an abundance of honors already including a major, which came at the Masters in 2022. At the age of 27, he’s likely not even reached his peak days just yet. We could have decades of another incredible American talent to enjoy, but his success is expected to begin in the short term.

Scheffler: amongst favorites for 2024 majors

Scheffler is the outright favorite for several of the 2024 major championships on the professional golfing calendar.

The sport has reached arguably its most competitive generation ever and Scheffler is still expected to sweep many of the honours individually. One of the potential honors that will be high on his priority list is the US Open. For those who frequently bet on golf, he’s currently priced as the +800 favorite to win the tournament next year. The tournament is incredibly prestigious, but it’s especially significant when an American triumphs in the event.

Tiger Woods won the US Open in 2000 and it contributed to a year in which he collected three out of the four majors. Scheffler will hope he can deliver on expectations and produce a similarly successful season to allow him to begin to threaten the legacy of the greats in 2024.

The PGA Championship is another competition that Scheffler is a comfortable favorite in and similarly, he’s a +800 leader in the odds. Scheffler is yet to win the tournament, and while it’s arguably the least prestigious of the four majors, a victory would represent a vital asset on the road to becoming the next American golfing legend.

Scottie Scheffler won $14 million last year, setting a new single-season PGA Tour earnings record.

But Jon Rahm ($13.6 million) and Scheffler ($12.5 million) are about to pass that number…with 5 months left in the season.

The Masters and the Open Championship are expected to provide much tougher opposition for Scheffler. He’ll have to face several elite players such as Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy, who are presently fancied ahead of him. The former is the reigning champion of the Masters, and the latter has experience in winning the Open from back in 2014.

The duo certainly have a level of experience and prestige within professional golf that gives them an advantage over Scheffler in some events. However, the American managed to get over the line in the Masters in 2022, he knows how demanding golf’s biggest stages are.

Huge expectations to join the greats

In terms of raw talent, Scheffler can go head-to-head with the all-time greats. However, in 2024, he must deal with the pressure of being expected to win several majors in order to gradually emerge into the list of greatest players throughout history.

Scheffler is certainly the greatest player in the world right now and his prime days still await. We’ve likely not seen his best, and that potential level could well see him become one of the greatest players of all time, and certainly another American legend.

The 2023 Ryder Cup USA star has just one major championship to his name so far, but if he can conquer the weight of the huge expectations on him, then many more could follow.
