S. J. Suryah made his directorial debut with Vaali in 1999 and its success catapulted him to stardom. His other notable films include Kushi (2000), New (2004), Aire Abe (2005), and Isai (2015). He made his acting debut in New and appeared in films such as Kalvanin Kadhali (2006), Thirumagan (2007), Vyabari (2007) and as an antagonist in Spyder (2017), Mersal (2017) and Maanaadu (2021).

He returned to acting after a sabbatical in Thalapathy Vijay’s “Mersal” as the villain, and then he reached his pinnacle with strong performances in “Monster,” “Iraivi,” and most recently “Maanaadu.”
