Rosalynn Carter died at 96 on Sunday, November 19, 2023. The Carter Center confirmed in a statement that she died peacefully with her family by her side.

On Friday, November 17, it was reported that Rosalynn had entered a hospice care home in the state of Georgia, and was spending time with her 99-year-old husband, who has been in hospice care since February.

Rosalynn was married for 77 years to Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States and the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize recipient, who is now 99 years old.

In a statement, former President Jimmy Carter said: “Rosalynn was my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished”

“She gave me wise guidance and encouragement when I needed it. As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew somebody loved and supported me”; he added.

“Besides being a loving mother and extraordinary First Lady, my mother was a great humanitarian in her own right,” said her son, Chip Carter.

“Her life of service and compassion was an example for all Americans. She will be sorely missed not only by our family but by the many people who have better mental health care and access to resources for caregiving today”

Rosalynn Carter Death

Rosalynn was born on Thursday, 18 August 1927. She married Jimmy Carter on 7 July 1946 and they had 4 children, 11 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren, after losing a grandson in 2015.

During her husband’s 1976 presidential campaign, Rosalynn acquired the label “steel magnolia,” a reference to her soft-spoken Southern demeanor that disguised an ambitious and resolute nature.

She devoted herself to several social causes in the course of her public life, including programs that supported health care resources, human rights, social justice, and the needs of elderly people.
