He worked as an Assistant United States Attorney in the District of Maryland from 2007 until 2014, prosecuting cases involving gang violence, drug trafficking, gun offenses, and white-collar crimes.

After Rod Rosenstein was appointed Deputy Attorney General, Hur returned to the Department of Justice as Principal Associate Deputy Attorney General, serving as his top deputy. His conclusion was that “Biden would likely present himself to a jury… as a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.” He also mentioned Biden’s memory as a contributing factor.
Hur’s description was criticized by the White House as improper, politicized commentary that deviated from standards of objective, legal analysis.
Other Democratic Party figures, including David Axelrod and James Carville, voiced concern that the story might damage Biden’s reputation in the continuing political discourse over age in the 2024 presidential contest. Hur tendered his resignation from the Department of Justice on March 11, 2024.
