While talking about how to create a Nandroid backup on Android and restore it using a custom recovery, I mentioned that the Nandroid backup is the mother of all restore tricks and it creates a complete image to your Android phone while creating a backup. When you later restore the backup, your entire phone will be restored including its firmware, settings, apps, and even wallpaper and ringtone settings.

Nandroid backup contains all the apps installed on your phone but while restoring the backup image there is no option to install only apps that don’t have it installed. It’s all or nothing.

However, using Titanium Backup, you can restore individual apps and their data on your phone, leaving all other existing settings intact. So let’s see how Titanium Backup can help you with this.

Restore Nandroid Backup with Titanium Backup

Step 1: Launch Titanium backup and wait for the app to launch. After the application launches all the modules, open the application menu and select Extract from Nandroid backup.

Step 2: Titanium Backup will then read your SD card and list all the Nandroid backups that exist along with the name of the restore used to create the backup. The names of Nandroid backups will provide the exact date and time that a particular backup was made.

Step 3: Click on the Nandroid backup from which you want to extract the apps. Nandroid Backup will list all apps (system + user) that you can bulk install along with app data.

The apps with the little yellow smiley face next to them are the apps that are already installed on your device, and the apps with the blue check mark are the missing apps.

Since the application shows all applications (user+system) and sometimes they are indicated by the package name, you need to be careful when restoring them.

Conclusion

We have seen nearly all basic backup and restore tasks that can use Titanium backups. In our next posts about apps, we will show you how it can help you manage the apps you have installed on your system. Don’t forget to catch up.
