Tagore, a Bengali Brahmin from Calcutta with gentry ancestry in Jessore and the Burdwan district, began writing poetry when he was eight years old. By rejecting rigid classical forms and defying linguistic conventions, Tagore modernised Bengali art. The transliteration of Thakur into English is Tagore.
