Play YouTube Videos (and From Other Sites) in KMPlayer

What is your first choice of media player? Also, what are the reasons why it is loved? If you asked me, I would say VLC Media Player and KMPlayer. They are known for their ability to play most of the available media formats.

I use either of these randomly but there are two exceptions.

  1. I choose VLC when I need to increase the volume. It is a great sound level amplifier.
  2. I choose KMPlayer when I want to watch videos on YouTube. Yes, you read it right. And, you should read on to find out how it works.

Cool Tip: PalyLink is a beautiful Firefox add-on that makes your desktop media player capable of playing any online video. Give it a try.

YouTube search feature was introduced in KM Player, version 3.4 onwards. So the steps here should work in version 3.4 and up.

Step 1: Launch the player interface. At the top right you will find a search icon as highlighted in the image below.

Find Kmp

Step 2: Clicking on the icon will allow you to search YouTube right from your player. Make sure that the YouTube icon is highlighted to the left of the search box.

Step 3: From the results, select your video. Just one click and your video will start playing. You can also control the quality and search based on categories like most viewed, most recent, etc.

Note: I recently upgraded to version 3.9 and to my surprise I couldn’t find the YouTube search icon on the player’s interface. However, I figured out how to play the video.

Step 1: Right click anywhere on the player and navigate to Open -> Open URL.

Kmp Open Url

Step 2: Here, paste the link/URL of the video you want to play. The cool thing about this method is that it’s not just limited to YouTube. If you have the right URL, you can play any online video.

This window also allows you to maintain your own URL repository for easier navigation in the future. I suggest you to switch to Custom URLs List and build a catalog of your favorite channels. Once you’ve joined and started watching, you can quickly change from one to another.

Hot Tip: Until this feature was available in KMPlayer, I used a third party app to accomplish this task. You might want to watch it, if you want to watch YouTube videos on a player other than KMPlayer.

Conclusion

I can watch YouTube videos directly in the browser. However, the flash player problem is just too annoying. Also, when I use the player, I can quickly switch between my online media and my local files on the same interface. Additional advantages come from KMPlayer features and facilities (e.g. shortcuts) on YouTube media.
