In the Toronto seat of Scarborough East, Calandra stood as the Canadian Alliance candidate in the 2000 federal election. John McKay, the incumbent liberal, beat him by 16,460 votes.

Eight years later, in the Oak Ridges, Markham York Region riding of the 2008 federal election, he ran as the Conservative candidate.

By 545 votes, he beat incumbent Liberal Lui Temelkovski. In 2011, he defeated Temelkovski once more, this time by 20,680 votes. Following his election in 2008, Calandra served as a member of the Government Operations and Estimates Committee, the Citizenship and Immigration Committee, and the Access to Information, Privacy, and Ethics Committee during his first term.

He also introduced two private member’s bills during this period. He proposed two pieces of legislation: “An Act Respecting the Establishment of a National Strategy for the Purchase and Sale of Second-Hand Precious Metal Articles” on March 11, 2011, and “An Act to Change the Name of the Electoral District of Oak Ridges, Markham” on June 19, 2009, respectively.

He won re-election in 2011 and was later named parliamentary secretary to the minister of Canadian heritage and official languages. He had previously served on the Standing Committee on Bill C-11 and the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage.

In 2012, Calandra had to reimburse $5,000 that had been given to his riding association during a fundraiser that had taken place at Kirupalini Kirupakaran’s house while he was there.

A company that lobbied the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) for the Toronto area’s 88.1 FM frequency allotment was WorldBand Media Inc., whose CEO’s sister was Kirupakaran.

Paul Calandra was named minister of international relations and parliamentary secretary to the prime minister in September 2013.

Calandra joined the discussion on what would happen to the property that the Canadian government had earlier expropriated for the Pickering Airport. In contrast to the stance adopted by all of his opponents, he declared support for a Buttonville-sized airport on the lands.

Calandra declared in September 2016 that he would run for the Ontario PC nomination in the Markham-Stouffville provincial seat.

Calandra won the nomination and was declared the PCs’ candidate for the 2018 provincial election on November 11. Calandra defeated incumbent Liberal Helena Jaczek to win the Markham-Stouffville seat in the 2018 Ontario election.

Calandra was hired on June 29, 2018, to serve as the minister of energy, northern development, and mines’ (energy) legislative assistant. With 48.42% of the vote in the Ontario general election of 2022, he was re-elected.

In 2019 Premier Doug Ford named Calandra as government house leader and minister without portfolio to the provincial cabinet.

In 2021, he received a promotion to full minister and was named the first minister of legislative affairs. Following Rod Philips’ retirement as minister of long-term care in 2022, Calandra was appointed to the position.

After Steve Clark’s resignation in September 2023, he was appointed minister of municipal affairs and housing.
