He was born to Colin Frank Cave and Dawn Cave. He grew up in rural Victoria, first in Warracknabeal and subsequently Wangaratta.
His mother worked as a librarian at the high school that Cave attended, and his father taught English and math at the nearby technical school.
Early on, Cave’s father introduced him to works of literature such as Lolita and Crime and Punishment. He also helped arrange the first symposium on Australian bushranger and outlaw Ned Kelly, who captivated Cave as a young boy.
Cave joined the Holy Trinity Cathedral choir in Wangaratta when he was nine years old. He was kicked out of Wangaratta High School at the age of 13.
