Who is Narendra Modi?

Narendra Modi, whose full name is Narendra Damodardas Modi, was born in Vadnagar, India, on September 17, 1950. He later advanced to the position of senior leader in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He helped his party win the Lok Sabha  elections in 2014, and as a result, he was sworn in as The Prime Minister of India. He had previously served as Gujarat state’s chief minister (head of government) from 2001 to 2014. Gujarat is located in western India.

Narendra Modi, the current prime minister, was raised in a small town in northern Gujarat. He organised a regional unit of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, the RSS’s student wing, shortly after joining the pro-Hindu Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) at the start of the 1970s. Narendra Modi steadily moved up the ranks of the RSS, and his association with the organisation was very helpful to his future political career. In 1987, Modi became a member of the BJP, and a year later the Gujarat sections of the organisation named him general secretary. Over the ensuing years, Narendra Modi played a significant role in the party’s significant increase in influence in the state. Narendra Modi contributed to the BJP’s success in the state legislative assembly elections of 1995, which allowed the group to establish India’s first-ever BJP-controlled government in March.

In 1978, Modi was appointed as an RSS sambhag pracharak (regional organiser), in charge of managing the organization’s operations in the Surat and Vadodara regions. In 1979, he relocated to Delhi to work for the RSS, where he was tasked with compiling the organization’s history of the Emergency. After L. K. Advani was elected president of the BJP in 1986, the RSS decided to place its members in important positions within the party. Modi’s work during the Ahmedabad election led to his selection for this role, and Modi was later elected organising secretary of the BJP’s Gujarat unit. In 1987, he assisted in organising the BJP’s campaign in the Ahmedabad municipal election, which the party won handily.

Modi advanced within the party and was appointed a member of its National Election Committee in 1990. Controverises on Gujarat Riot

Near Godhra, a train carrying several hundred passengers caught fire on February 27, 2002, killing about 60. After a religious ceremony at the location of the demolished Babri Masjid, many Hindu pilgrims were returning from Ayodhya on the train carrying a large number of them. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad issued a bandh (general strike) call the following day for the entire state. Anti-Muslim violence erupted during the bandh and quickly spread throughout Gujarat.Violence increased as a result of the government’s decision to transport the train victims’ bodies from Godhra to Ahmedabad.Scholars generally believe that the Gujarati government was complicit in the riots and have harshly criticised the way it handled the situation. Some scholars specifically blame Modi.

There is still controversy surrounding Modi’s personal participation in the events of 2002. He stated that “What is happening is a chain of action and reaction” during the riots. The protest petition was denied by the magistrate’s court in December 2013 and the SIT’s conclusion that there was no evidence against Modi was accepted. In 2022, the Supreme Court dismissed a petition filed by Zakia Jafri in which she contested the SIT’s clean bill of health for Modi in the riots and upheld earlier decisions that no evidence had been uncovered against him.

Prior to the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Modi was named the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate in September 2013.The BJP received 31% of the vote and increased its number of seats in the Lok Sabha by more than twice that amount, to 282, becoming the first party to do so since 1984.Modi was announced as the BJP’s nominee for prime minister in the 2019 general election on October 13, 2018. Amit Shah, the president of the BJP, led the party’s political campaign. In opposition to the INC’s Chowkidar Chor Hai campaign slogan, Modi started the Main Bhi Chowkidar campaign before the general election. After the Pulwama attack, Modi prioritised defence and national security as major election campaign issues, and his administration was credited with success for the retaliatory airstrike on Balakot. The National Democratic Alliance unanimously decided to elect me as prime minister for a second term after the alliance won the election with 353 seats in the Lok Sabha, with the BJP winning 303 seats on its own.

Controversies on Educational Qualification

Modi graduated with a third-class Bachelor of Arts in political science from the School of Open Learning (SOL) at the University of Delhi in 1978. He graduated with a first-class in political science from Gujarat University five years later, in 1983, and did so while pursuing an external distance learning programme. His educational background is the subject of debate. In response to an RTI inquiry, the SOL stated that it was unaware of any students who received a BA in 1978. The subjects listed in Modi’s MA degree, according to Jayantibhai Patel, a former political science professor at Gujarat University, were not available at the institution when Modi was a student there.
