He served as captain of the Indian national team in limited-overs forms from 2007 to 2017 and in Test cricket from 2008 to 2014. MS Dhoni’s Domestic Career:
In the 1999–2000 season, Dhoni made his Ranji Trophy debut for Bihar as an eighteen-year-old. While representing Bihar against Bengal in the 2000–01 season, Dhoni earned his first century in a first-class match. Dhoni’s performance in the 2002–03 season featured three half-centuries in the Ranji Trophy and a few half-centuries in the Deodhar Trophy as he began to garner notoriety for both his hard-hitting batting approach and contribution to the lower order. Dhoni scored 244 runs in 4 games for the East Zone team that won the Deodhar Trophy in 2003–2004, including a century (114 runs) against the Central Zone.
Deep Dasgupta, an international cricketer, was passed up for Dhoni to represent East Zone in the Duleep Trophy finals. Through the BCCI’s TRDW small-town talent-spotting programme, Dhoni’s skill was found. When he saw Dhoni play for Jharkhand in a match in Jamshedpur in 2003, TRDO Prakash Poddar, the captain of Bengal in the 1960s, saw him and filed a report to the National Cricket Academy. He was selected for the India A team for a tour of Zimbabwe and Kenya in recognition of his achievements throughout the 2003–04 season, particularly in the One Day format.

Dhoni was chosen for the ODI squad for the Bangladesh trip in 2004–2005 after creating a name for himself in the India A team. Dhoni’s ODI career did not get off to an auspicious start as he was run out for a duck. Dhoni was selected for the Pakistan ODI series despite a lacklustre performance against Bangladesh. At his fifth one-day international, Dhoni hit 148 at Visakhapatnam during the second game of the series off just 123 deliveries.
In the first two games of the Sri Lankan bilateral ODI series (October-November 2005), Dhoni got little chances to bat, and in the third ODI, he was moved up to the No. 3 position. Dhoni was given more responsibility to speed up the score, and he finished the match with an undefeated 183 from 145 balls to give India the victory. The second innings of the game broke several records, including the best individual score in ODI cricket. Dhoni received the Man of the Series award for his efforts and finished the series with the highest run total (346). Dhoni received a B-grade contract from the BCCI in December 2005.
India shockingly lost to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in the group round of the 2007 Cricket World Cup, ending their tournament run. Dhoni scored just 29 runs during the tournament and was out for a duck in each of these games. The house that Dhoni was building in his hometown of Ranchi was vandalised and wrecked by JMM political activists following the 2007 Cricket World Cup defeat to Bangladesh. As India was eliminated from the World Cup in the first round, the neighbourhood cops set tight protection for his family.
Dhoni was selected as the team’s vice-captain for the seven-match ODI series between India and England and the series against South Africa in Ireland. Dhoni was given a “B” grade contract in December 2005, then in June 2007, he was given a “A” grade deal. In September 2007, MS Dhoni was picked to captain India in the inaugural World T20. Then, on September 24, 2007, he led India to win over archrival Pakistan in the ICC World Twenty 20 final in South Africa, becoming only the second Indian captain to have won a World Cup in any form of cricket, after Kapil Dev.
From thereon, he didn’t look back as captain and went on to grab his 2nd ICC title on April 2, 2011 defeating Srilanka at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai to lift the 50 overs Cricket World Cup.
Dhoni became the first and only skipper in the history of international cricket to win all ICC trophies after winning the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy. He was out for a duck in the rain-shortened championship game versus England and finished the competition with 27 runs in two innings.
He played his final series during India’s tour of Australia in the 2014–15 season, leading the team in the second and third tests. India lost the second and drew the third, falling behind 2-0 in the series going into the Sydney Test. Dhoni declared his departure from the format after the third Test in Melbourne.
Just before the home ODI series against England in January 2017, Dhoni announced his resignation as India’s limited overs captain. At the 2017 Champions Trophy, he was selected as a wicketkeeper for the “Team of the Tournament” by Cricbuzz. He was also included in Cricbuzz’s ODI XI of the year. In the second ODI against England during his team’s 2018 tour, Dhoni passed 10,000 ODI runs, becoming the fourth Indian and the twelfth overall. He was included in India’s team for the 2019 Cricket World Cup in April 2019. Dhoni participated in his 350th ODI in India’s semi-final game against New Zealand in July 2019.
