On Thursday(1st June 2023), Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, the director general of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), was chosen as one of the three vice presidents of the World Meteorological Organisation. The UN agency for climate change, weather, and water chose two other vice presidents in addition to Mohapatra. He conducts research on cyclones and other extreme weather conditions, such as thunderstorms, heavy rain, and monsoonal low pressure systems. During cyclone “Fani,” the authorities were able to ensure the early evacuation of millions of people thanks to Mohapatra and his team at the IMD’s Cyclone Warning Division’s accurate forecasts of cyclones, their wind-speed, and their likely impact on life and property. For a period of five years, the scientist served as the IMD Director General of Meteorology.
