Mike LaFleur was born and raised in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. He attended Central Michigan University, where he played wide receiver for the Chippewas from 2001 to 2004. After graduating, he began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at his alma mater.
In 2008, LaFleur joined the staff at Saginaw Valley State University as wide receivers coach. He spent two seasons there before moving on to Northern Michigan University, where he served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for two seasons.
In 2012, LaFleur joined the staff of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an offensive assistant, working primarily with the wide receivers. He spent two seasons in Tampa before joining the Cleveland Browns as the wide receivers coach in 2014.
In 2016, LaFleur was hired by the Atlanta Falcons as the wide receivers coach, where he worked under head coach Dan Quinn and offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan. During his time in Atlanta, LaFleur helped develop wide receiver Julio Jones into one of the best in the NFL and the team reached to Super Bowl.
In 2017, LaFleur followed Shanahan to the San Francisco 49ers, where he was named the wide receivers coach. He was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2020, taking over for Shanahan who left to become head coach of the 49ers.
