Rachel Smalley is a New Zealand journalist, television and radio presenter who from 2013 to 2017, hosted Early Edition every weekday morning on Newstalk ZB and wrote regular columns for the New Zealand Herald. Rachel Smalley grew up in rural Canterbury and attended high school at Lincoln High School, graduating in 1988 (grade six).
After graduating from Wellington Polytechnic, Rachel Smalley began her career in radio journalism with Newstalk ZB before moving to TV3. Rachel Smalley moved to the UK and worked for Sky News. She then became a correspondent for MediaWorks Europe for a period before returning to New Zealand to host Nightline on TV3.
In 2011, Rachel Smalley began presenting the station’s Firstline breakfast show. She also hosts the weekly politics and current affairs program The Nation. In 2013, Rachel Smalley began hosting the morning radio show Early Edition on Newstalk ZB, airing weekdays from 5am to 6am. In 2014, Smalley joined TVNZ’s Q+A team on TV One.
Rachel Smalley is a former Today FM presenter, strategic communicator and creative and influential storyteller. She has spent more than two decades working across media platforms television, radio, digital and print, including as a foreign correspondent for TV3 and as host of several wide-ranging information, political and current affairs broadcasts.
She worked in Europe for eight years covering a number of events of global significance, including the elections in France and the UK, the conflict in Afghanistan and the London bombings. She also spent a week with the British Law Lords in Downing Street reporting on the Privy Council hearing into the Bain family murders and covering the 2008 election of Barack Obama in Washington DC.
She also witnessed the rise and fall of a group of National and Labor leaders, and was a frontline journalist during the Christchurch earthquake and Pike River tragedy. In recent years, Rachel Smalley has worked for NZME, during which time she led a year-long fundraising campaign for World Vision, which covered the horrors of the Syrian refugee crisis.
On October 13, 2017, Rachel Smalley announced her departure from Newstalk ZB and her 20-year journalism career. Her last show Early Edition aired on December 15, 2017.
