He went to St. James High School in Chester and played basketball for coach Jack Ramsay. He received his diploma in 1953.

He did his undergraduate studies at the prestigious Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia. During his time at the university, he played three seasons for the Hawks, and at that time, the Hawks were also coached by Dr. Jack Ramsay, and led the team to the Big 5’s inaugural championship as well as the school’s first postseason appearance in the 1956 National Invitation Tournament (NIT). He also competed on their track and field team.

McKinney returned to his hometown of Pennsylvania with his family after leaving coaching. He worked as a sales representative for a major sporting goods company, as well as filling in as a color analyst for Philadelphia 76ers broadcasts on occasion.

He claimed to have received offers to return to coaching but never accepted any of them. He and his wife would eventually retire to Florida.

McKinney co-wrote a book about his experiences at Saint Joseph’s in 2005 and donated 10% of the proceeds to the school.
