He was raised in Tustin, California. He went to Foothill High School in North Tustin, California, with his younger sister, Amy.

He later attended Fullerton College before enrolling at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Pasadena, California, alongside fellow actor Paul Rudd. He also attended New York City’s Circle in the Square Theatre School.

He was cast in John Waters’ black comedy Serial Mom in 1994. He was cast in five films the following year, including Hackers, a thriller about a group of high school kids who foil a multimillion-dollar corporate extortion plot.
