Judd broke her leg in four places after falling over a downed tree. She is still undergoing intensive care in a hospital in South Africa.
The actress got lost in a remote part of the rainforest and it took almost 55 hours to get her to the hospital for surgery.
She first had to wait five hours for a rescue team while in severe pain on the forest floor. Dr. Martin Surbeck is thought to have been one of the men who came to help Ashley Judd get out of the rainforest. Ashley Judd and Dr. Surbeck have also worked together at the Kokolopori bonobo research facility.
Who is Dr Martin Surbeck?
Martin Surbeck has been an assistant professor in the department of human evolutionary biology at Harvard University since 2019.
He initially studied biology and zoology at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore and the University of Zurich. Surbeck received a PhD from the Max Planck Institute of Evolutionary Anthropology in 2011.
Dr. Martin Surbeck’s research examines competition and cooperation amongst groups like chimpanzees and bonobos with an emphasis on the social organization of bonobos.
The Kokolopori bonobo research center is run by Dr. Surbeck and the Bonobo Conservation Initiative.
