Marilyn Mosby was born to Linda Thompson and Alan C. James. When Mosby was born, her mother was seventeen. Her grandpa was one of the first African-American police officers in the state, thus her family can trace its ties to the police back two generations. Her mother and father both went on to become police officers.
Marilyn was not raised by her parents but by her grandparents in the Dorchester section of Boston, Massachusetts.

From 2005 to 2011, Mosby worked for Baltimore as an assistant state’s attorney and as a law clerk. She had completed a number of legal internships in Boston throughout her time in law school prior to then.
Mosby declared his intention to run for Baltimore’s State’s Attorney in 2013. In the Democratic primary, she faced off against the incumbent, Gregg L. Bernstein, and won with 55% of the vote. In the general election, she encountered no opposition from Republicans.
With 94 percent of the vote, Mosby defeated Independent Russell A. Neverdon Sr., who ran a write-in campaign, to win the general election. Mosby was a major US city’s youngest top prosecutor when she was elected.
The day Mosby took office was January 8, 2015. Not long after taking office, Mosby announced a reorganization of her office based on concepts from the prosecutor’s offices in Atlanta, Los Angeles, and New York.
During her campaign, Mosby brought up the idea of measures that would have let prosecutors bring previous charges against serial sex offenders during trial, but her efforts were unsuccessful.
She was successful in getting sex offender Nelson Clifford, who had been exonerated in four prior incidents of sexual assault using the “consent” defense, to be convicted in May 2015.
She declared in January 2019 that her office would no longer prosecute anyone for possessing marijuana, no matter how much was in their possession.
She went on to say she would overturn convictions for possession of roughly 5,000 marijuana cases. In an effort to stop the COVID-19 pandemic in Baltimore prisons in 2020, she said that her office would no longer prosecute cases involving drug possession, prostitution, infractions of the law, and other low-level offenses.
She declared in March 2021 that the brief experiment would not be repeated because it had not resulted in more significant crimes.
On April 12, 2022, Mosby declared her intention to seek reelection for a third term. On July 19, Ivan Bates, a defense lawyer, defeated her in the Democratic primary.
The CARES Act outlines specific requirements for qualifying withdrawals, such as a reduction in income due to a COVID-related layoff or due to quarantining. On January 13, 2022, a federal grand jury indicted Mosby on a charge of perjury, claiming she had falsely claimed financial hardship related to COVID-19 in order to request one-time withdrawals of $40,000 and $50,000 of her deferred compensation funds.
However, she had reportedly continued to draw her full salary during the period and had even seen an increase in pay.
She was also charged with falsifying information on her mortgage applications for her condo and house in Florida by omitting to include her federal tax obligations. The indictment consists of four charges.
Against the accusations, Mosby entered a not-guilty plea on February 4, 2022. Her trial was set to start in March 2023, but it was further postponed when, in January of that year, her defense lawyers were allowed to leave the case following allegations that they had broken court regulations.

A public defender has been appointed to represent her after it was decided that she is indigent.On November 9, 2023, Mosby’s perjury trial concluded with a conviction on both charges. At sentence, she may spend five years in federal prison for each offense.
The allegations in the lawsuit concerning her alleged falsification of mortgage applications for two Florida vacation properties each have a maximum sentence of thirty years in federal prison.
