He is regarded by many as one of the most divisive individuals in heavy metal music and has been embroiled in several disputes throughout the course of his career. American politicians lambasted him for his lyrics, which were also the subject of legislative hearings.
A number of American states passed laws specifically prohibiting the band from playing in facilities run by the government. Manson was wrongly attributed by the news media in 1999 as having influenced the shooters at Columbine High School.
