Liam Manning career

Manning began his career at his hometown team, Norwich City, through their academy. In 2002, he made his professional debut at Ipswich Town, where he remained until his release in 2005.

After being released by Ipswich, Manning went into non-league play, spending time with Bishop’s Stortford, Long Melford, and Leiston. He then had a brief stint with Selfoss in Iceland.

Manning rejoined Leiston after his trip to Iceland, and he played for the team from 2006 until 2008. After stints with Wroxham, Melton St Audrey, and Ipswich Wanderers, Manning eventually made his way back to Woodbridge and gave up playing football to focus on coaching.

Prior to becoming the head coach of West Ham United’s U23 team in the Premier League in 2015, Manning was an academy coach at Ipswich Town.

He left in 2019 to work for City Football Group, first with Major League Soccer team New York City FC as director of coaching and then as academy director.

Remaining in the City Football Group, Manning was appointed head coach of Belgian First Division B team Lommel SK in July 2020. There, he helped the team, who had been at the bottom of the table, move up to third place by the end of the 2020–21 season.

Manning became a member of Milton Keynes Dons, a League One team, on August 13, 2021. Manning was named EFL League One Manager of the Month for September 2021 on October 8, 2021, following just eleven league games in charge. During that month, he guided the team to an undefeated run of five league games and eleven points.

In just four months, he achieved it again, winning League One Manager of the Month in January 2022 following a similarly fruitful run.

Manning had guided the team to a third-place finish with 89 points at the end of his rookie season, just missing out on automatic promotion by one point.

The team, however, lost to Wycome Wanderers over two semifinal legs and was thus unable to advance through the playoffs.

On December 11, 2022, Manning was fired by the team after a terrible start to the season that left them in the relegation zone. He had only managed to pick up fifteen points from twenty games, six points above safety, and was just above the bottom on goal differential.

Manning was named head coach of Oxford United, a League One team, on March 11, 2023. He led his new team to four victories from five games during an outstanding start to the next season, earning him the title of League One Manager of the Month.

After leading the team through 29 games while it was second in League One, Manning departed the team in November 2023. Manning left Oxford United on November 7, 2023, along with his assistant manager Chris Hogg, and signed a deal with Bristol City of the EFL Championship that would last until June 2027.
