Prior to the Prince Albert Raiders selecting him in the second round of the 2012 CHL Import Draft, Draisaitl spent his formative years playing hockey in Germany.

He spent two seasons with the Raiders until the Edmonton Oilers selected him third overall in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.

Draisaitl won the Ted Lindsay Award for most outstanding player, the Hart Memorial Trophy for regular season MVP, and the Art Ross Trophy as the top point scorer in the NHL for the first time in 2020.

Draisaitl is the international face of Germany. In 2013 and 2014, he participated in the World Junior Championships as a member of the German junior squad, acting as team captain in the latter event.

He received a one-game penalty after being expelled from a round-robin match against the United States in 2014 due to a hit from behind.
