At the age of twenty-one, Sissay published his first collection of poetry in 1988. Since then, he has written full-time and given readings all over the world.
He recorded a BBC documentary about his life, Internal Flight, in 1995. His 2006 BBC Radio 3 adaptation of his drama Something Dark, which explores his search for his family, won the UK Commission for Racial Equality’s Race in the Media Award (RIMA).
