Lee Kuan Yew’s career

Lee received a scholarship at Raffles College (now the National University of Singapore) after graduating from Raffles Institution.

Lee avoided becoming the target of a purge during the Japanese occupation and later started his own enterprises while working as an administrative service officer for the Japanese propaganda office.

Following the end of World War II, Lee temporarily attended the London School of Economics before going to Fitzwilliam College in Cambridge to study law. He earned a double first degree there in 1947 and left the school.

In 1950, he received a call to the Bar from the Middle Temple. When he eventually made it back to Singapore, he worked as a lawyer and advocate while pushing for an end to British colonial control.

In 1954, Lee helped create the People’s Action Party (PAP), and in the general election of 1955, he took home his first electoral victory at the Tanjong Pagar division. In the legislature, he rose to the position of de facto opposition leader under Labour Front Chief Ministers David Marshall and Lim Yew Hock.

During his presidency, Lee managed Singapore’s development into a developed nation with a high-income economy while maintaining a lopsided legislative majority at every general election. He created a very successful, anti-corruption government and civil service during this process.

A champion of Asian ideals and Realpolitik pragmatism, Lee’s premiership was particularly criticized in the West for being semi-authoritarian and compared to a nanny state and guided democracy.

Critics have charged Lee with limiting press freedoms, placing stringent restrictions on public demonstrations, preventing labor groups from engaging in industrial or strike action through co-optation and anti-union legislation, and filing defamation cases against well-known political rivals.

Others countered that his acts were beneficial to the nation’s early development and that even though he ruled with an iron hand, his premiership was honorable.
