While promoting the repeal of the death penalty and organizing anti-war protests, Sinema served as the Green Party’s regional spokesperson. She had prepared 15 anti-war demonstrations before the Iraq War began.

She opposed the war in Afghanistan as well. During a demonstration on February 15, 2003, in Phoenix’s Patriots Square Park, a group led by Sinema distributed flyers showing a U.S. service member as a skeleton “inflicting ‘U.S. terror’ in Iraq and the Middle East.”

In a 2003 opinion piece, Sinema asserted that Presidents George H. W. Bush and Ronald Reagan were the real lovers of Saddam and Osama.

Sinema made her formal campaign announcement on September 28, 2017, for the Class I United States Senate seat currently held by Republican incumbent Jeff Flake, who decided not to run for reelection the following month.

In March 2018, Sinema donated $33,800 to charity that she had received as campaign funding from Ed Buck, a well-known Democratic donor who came under fire after a homeless man overdosed at his California home in 2017.

Sinema declined to engage in a debate with Deedra Abboud, an attorney and community activist, who was her Democratic primary rival. The Democratic primary for the open Senate seat was won by Sinema in August.
