Canadian professional Ice Hockey defenseman, Kristopher Joseph Pierre Irwin Letang was born on April 24th, 1987 in Montreal, Canada.
Letang was born to Claude Fouquet and Christiane Letang. His father, Claude was a salesman who sold 18-wheeler semi-trucks. Christiane worked in different businesses while Kris was growing up before eventually forming a company that distributed pet products she sold a few years ago.
Letang spent his early years in the city up until the age of 4, when he relocated to the Sainte-Julie suburb where he spent the remainder of his youth.
Letang says that he physically differs little from either of his parents, despite having Claude’s long hair and in terms of personality, he is more like Christiane. Letang describes himself s a troublemaker when he was a kid.
Letang is a member of the National Hockey League’s Pittsburgh Penguins (NHL). He spent three seasons playing junior hockey in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), where he was chosen 62nd overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.
Letang won the Stanley Cup with Pittsburgh in 2009, his second full NHL season. In 2016, the Penguins defeated the San Jose Sharks to make him a two-time Stanley Cup champion. In 2017, the Penguins defeated the Nashville Predators to make him a three-time Stanley Cup champion.
He has represented Canada internationally at the under-18 and under-20 levels, taking home back-to-back World Junior Championship gold medals in 2006 and 2007.
Letang made his international debut for Canada during the 2005 World U18 Championships in the Czech Republic, during his junior season. Letang won a silver medal with four points in six games, falling to the United States in the championship game.
Letang participated in the World Junior Championships for the following two years, winning gold in 2006 and 2007 as part of a five-year Canadian championship streak. In Vancouver, where Canada served as the host nation, he helped his nation win the inaugural gold medal. The following year, he returned to Sweden as team captain and scored six points in six games.
Along with Jonathan Toews and Carey Price, Letang was selected to the tournament All-Star team.
Letang has a tattoo done on his arm during his Olympic break. The portion of the tattoo is dedicated to his grandmother and according to him, she always has been there for him.
The bottom portion of the tattoo and the guitar part is obviously dedicated to Letang’s best friend and former roommate Luc Bourdon who used to play for Vancouver Canucks and tragically died in a motorcycle accident on May 29, 2008.
During the 2008 NHL Draft, the Canucks’ management wore guitar pins to remember Bourdon, because he was an avid guitarist.
