After training camp, Dach joined the Blackhawks and promptly started his professional playing career. On October 20, 2019, he faced the Washington Capitals in his NHL debut. On October 22, during a 2-1 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights, Dach scored his first NHL goal.
Dach had 8 goals and 15 assists in 64 games for the 2019–20 NHL season, which was cut short by the pandemic. His point total was comparable to that of Jack Hughes and Kaapo Kakko, the two players selected before him in the draft.

In the middle of a dismal season for the Blackhawks that saw a complete change in management, Dach returned to the lineup full-time in the 2021–22 season, although he struggled to contribute. In 70 games, he only scored 9 goals and recorded 17 assists, and he also had trouble winning faceoffs.
Dach was dealt by the Chicago Blackhawks to the Montreal Canadiens on July 7, 2022, at the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, in exchange for the thirteenth overall pick and a third-round pick.

In order to complete the transaction, the Canadiens had to exchange defenseman Alexander Romanov for the thirteenth overall pick from the New York Islanders. General manager Kent Hughes had stated that he thought Dach could fulfill his potential despite his previous problems.
Dach and the Canadiens agreed to a four-year, $13.45 million deal on September 7, 2022. On October 17, they defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 thanks to Dach’s first goal for the squad in overtime.
Dach was selected for Team Canada in 2018 for the Hlinka Gretzky Cup, where he contributed to 5 goals and 2 assists over the course of 5 games. Dach scored a goal in the first period of Team Canada’s gold medal match against Sweden to lead the team to a 6-2 triumph.
He was given by the Blackhawks as a loan to the Canadian team competing at the 2021 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships, where he later assumed the captaincy. Dach collided with Russian forward Ilya Safonov on December 23 during Team Russia’s only pre-tournament game against Canada.
Dach was hurt enough by the collision to leave the game right away and never come back. Dach would be forced to sit out the remainder of the competition due to a wrist fracture, according to X-rays taken afterward.
