Kim Dotcom career

Dotcom gained notoriety in Germany in the 1990s as a hacker and Internet businessman who profited from the inexperience of reporters in technical matters.

In 1994, he was detained for selling stolen phone calling card numbers. In 1998, he was found guilty of 11 counts of computer fraud, 10 counts of data espionage, and a number of other offenses. He was given a two-year suspended sentence.

Dotcom founded and served as CEO of the now-defunct Megaupload file storage service from 2005 to 2012.

Its website was taken down in 2012 after the US Department of Justice filed accusations against Dotcom for criminal copyright infringement, money laundering, racketeering, and wire fraud.

Dotcom, who has accused US officials of waging a vendetta against him on behalf of politically significant Hollywood studios, denies any wrongdoing.

The New Zealand Court of Appeal upheld the lower court’s decision in 2018. Dotcom contested the judgment to the Supreme Court of New Zealand, which decided in 2020 that he could be extradited to the US but could contest the ruling through a judicial review.

Mega is a cloud storage service that Dotcom introduced in 2013, yet he cut all links to it in 2015. He also founded and provided funding for the Internet Party.
