Kevin Owen McCarthy was born on January 26th, 1965 in Bakersfield, California. He served as House Minority Leader in the United States House of Representatives from 2019.
He was born to Roberta Darlene who worked as a homemaker and Owen McCarthy who was an assistant city fire chief.
McCarthy has lived in Kern County for four generations. His paternal grandfather was Irish, while his maternal grandfather was an immigrant from Italy.
McCarthy became the first Republican in his family, whereas his parents were all Democrats as well as most of the members in his family.
He earned a Bachelor of Science in marketing from California State University, Bakersfield, in 1989, and a Master of Business Administration from the same institution in 1994.
Kevin McCarthy served as a Republican and held the position of House Majority Leader from 2014 to 2019 under John Boehner and Paul Ryan. He has been the House Minority Leader of the United States House of Representatives since 2019.
McCarthy is currently serving his seventh term in the House after formerly representing California’s 22nd congressional district from 2007 to 2013 and 23rd district since that year.
McCarthy formerly served as the president of the Young Republican National Federation and the California Young Republicans. From 2002 to 2006, he served as a lawmaker in the California State Assembly, serving the latter two years as the minority leader. He won a 2006 election for Congress.
McCarthy served as the Republican Chief Deputy Whip from 2009 to 2011 before being chosen for House leadership.

He was elected majority whip when Republicans took control of the House in 2011 and served in that capacity until August 2014, when he took over for outgoing majority leader Eric Cantor, who lost his primary contest.
McCarthy was chosen as minority leader in January 2019, becoming the first Republican from California to assume the position after the party’s majority was lost in the 2018 midterm elections and Speaker Paul Ryan announced his retirement.

Judy McCarthy and her husband, Kevin McCarthy have been blessed with two children; Meghan McCarthy who is a songwriter, executive creative director, screenwriter, film and television producer. and Connor McCarthy who got married to Emily Ann Morris in 2020 at the opulent Cass House location in Cayucos, San Luis Obispo County.
