Professional Career
Summer in Calcutta (1965), The Descendants (1967), The Old Playhouse and Other Poems (1973), and numerous other poetry collections are among Das’ works. She was well-known for both her English-language poems and a number of her Malayalam short stories. She founded the Lok Seva Party despite never having been involved in politics before. These are some of the films based on the storylines written by Kamala Das, including Neermaathalathinte Pookkal, Mazha, and others.
She has also held the positions of Chairperson of the Kerala Forest Board and Vice-Chairperson of the Kerala Sahitya Academy. She won the PEN Asian Poetry Prize, the English-language Kendra Sahitya Academy Award, the Kerala State Film Award for Best Story, among many other honours.
Conversion to Islam
At the age of 65, she converted to Islam on December 11th, taking the name Kamala Surayya. After coming under the influence of professor Sadiq Ali, she took this decision.
